Artist of the Month: Liina Nilsson aka NYX

03.31.2010 · Posted by Roberto C. Madruga

Liina Nilsson’s videos are astonishingly intricate and beautifully spooky. She has more impressive work, so make sure to explore her Vimeo page. It’s going to be interesting to watch her develop.

“I’m NYX, a video artist and VJ in Berlin. For the moment my passions lie in the medium of video, the cutting up, messing up, repositioning and layering of a narrative. I’m attempting to construct and program a new tool for my VJing and I’m searching for ways of incorporating the idea of cut-up – the fluent real time scrambling of stories – into my work as a video artist.”

I ♥ BIT.TRIP RUNNER

03.30.2010 · Posted by Roberto C. Madruga

===================================================================================================================
“Runner controls as well as you’d expect: the platforming is incredibly precise, and it’s surprisingly easy to make a distinction between the stuff you need to interact with and the considerable visual noise that comprises the background. Each jump and dodge results in a sort of 8-bit beep, and the obstacles are thrown at you in such a way that by successfully navigating the level, you also sort-of create a song. From a musical perspective, the game is more along the lines of the uberlinear Bit.Trip Beat than the more improvisational Bit.Trip Core, but it still sounds distinctly like a Bit.Trip game. When you’re doing well, you get into that same sort of aesthetic nirvana where everything — the visuals, the music, and your own control — feel as if they’re in a kooky, transcendental harmony.” read article in its entirety (Destructoid)

Brooklyn Typology
photographs and data describing Brooklyn

03.30.2010 · Posted by Roberto C. Madruga

Here’s a massively detailed “portrait” of Brooklyn.  Valerie and I have visited Brooklyn on multiple occasions and are completely in love with the area, to the point that we’re making the steps to one day move there.
===========================================================================================================================

===========================================================================================================================
“The subject of continuous residential development since the mid-1600s, every trend in American architecture and urban planning has inscribed itself onto Brooklyn’s moraine and salt marshes. Brooklyn Typology is an investigation of borough’s population and urban form. It consists of 2100 photographs taken in a sample of block groups in Brooklyn, plus detailed Census, historical, and typological data about the residential and housing in area. Together, the interlinked photographs and data form a portrait of the urban fabric of Brooklyn.”

EHSHOWCASE001: Animal Glitches

03.28.2010 · Posted by Roberto C. Madruga

=========================================================================
EHSHOWCASE is the newest feature on Evolve Happy in which I’ll showcase an artist, performer or business of interest via mini-documentary.  This EHSHOWCASE featuring Animal Glitches is the first.
=========================================================================
=========================================================================
A few weeks ago, Valerie and I visited Tiffany Mack and Elliot Fleming of Animal Glitches in Petersburg, VA.  They met us in the parking lot outside their studio on a windy but sunny Saturday. For the next few hours, we hung out in their studio and we interviewed them.  We had a great time and are proud to present EHSHOWCASE001: Animal Glitches.
=========================================================================

=========================================================================
Additionally, we’ve also asked Animal Glitches to put together five limited edition EH t-shirts.  When we visited them, we had the chance to see the first one (Wow!) and we’re seriously excited.  When they’re completed (around the beginning of April), we’ll post about them on Evolve Happy (pictures, how to purchase, etc).  Please stay tuned.

AFOL: A Blocumentary by Jess Gibson

03.22.2010 · Posted by Roberto C. Madruga

Here’s a  documentary about “adult fans of LEGO” (AFOLs).  It’s the “first in a series of Blocumentaries about the Adult Fans of LEGO,” so hopefully we’ll see more in the future.

“Passion combines with creativity in this documentary that features a selection of AFOLs (Adult Fans Of LEGO) from the Pacific NorthWest.”
