“The evolution of the Cousteau manifests itself in the Zissou. Adapted from the same boat-ready platform, its easy to wear canvas upper contains subtle amphibian twists and details such as the accommodating neoprene heel and custom footbed. The Zissou dives into the adventure with a thirst for life.”

On August 1st, I’m taking my wife to Barcelona for her birthday. We’re staying for one whole week and could not be more excited about it. We have a thick itinerary and will be sure to take a massive amount of photos to remember and share our trip. We’ve planned to highlight all that Barcelona has to offer: history, architecture, museums, fashion and cuisine. During this time and until Monday, August 9th, I will not be posting on Evolve Happy. However, be prepared for a review of our Barcelona vacation. Also, if you follow me on Twitter, I’ll be tweeting during the entire trip.

——————————————————————————————— Mr. Newton finds the most wonderfully dressed people and showcases their sizzling style on his website. Don’t you know, a runway is not needed for fashion to prevail. This website is addictive; you’ll be looking at it for hours before you realize that time has slowly melted away and these people are now your very fashionable friends and you want to be their friend too. I love this site.

————————————————– Micachu and The Shapes are phenomenal and Pitchfork has created a tiny documentary about them. It’s on Pitchfork: TV for one week only. Highly recommended.

“Chladni patterns were discovered by Robert Hook and Ernst Chladni in the 18th and 19th centuries. They found that when they bowed a piece of glass covered in flour, (using an ordinary violin bow), the powder arranged itself in resonant patterns according to places of stillness and vibration. Today, Chladni plates are often electronically driven by tone generators and used in scientific demonstrations, but with carefully sung notes (and a transducer driving the plate), I’m able to explore the same resonances. I’m currently writing songs based on sequences of patterns.”

Here’s an article explaining how to taste like a professional chocolate taster:

“Last week I had the good fortune of visiting Tain-l’Hermitage, a town in the southeastern quarter of France, near Valence. It is right in the middle of the Hermitage and Crozes-Hermitage wine country, in a gorgeous area that’s full of peach, cherry and apricot orchards. But me, I was there for the chocolate: Tain is also home to the Valrhona chocolate factory, and I’d been invited to take a tour.
We spent the day in paper hats, paper coats, and paper shoes (v. becoming), going in and out of large halls housing huge machinery, fat bags of cacao beans and ripples of chocolate, breathing in the intoxicating scents cacao emits as it is submitted to the many torments (cleaned, roasted, husked, crushed, ground, conched, molded, cooled, wrapped) that will turn it from bitter bean to the voluptuous antidepressant we know and love.” read article in its entirety (Chocolate & Zucchini)

I’ve also included a mini-doc about the masterfully talented Mast Brothers.
———————————————————————————————————————————————-
“The life of a mariner is one given over to wanderlust—the quest for adventure, crossing unseen horizons to secure precious goods—only to bring them back to their home port. This same love of adventure and curiosity defines the brotherhood of Rick and Michael Mast. They share a fiercely independent spirit, leaping into the unknown and trusting that they’ll find the answer through endurance and dedication to their craft.
They began their voyage in their apartment, using a homemade machine to process cacao beans. Over time they cultivated their creation, sourcing beans from family farms in Madagascar, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, and Ecuador. Each bar is handmade with incredible reverence for the process and history of chocolate. They are bound in ornamental papers and golden foil like a collection of rare books. Each bar offers its own story of flavors, and no two are exactly alike.
The Mast Brothers are now planning to navigate the mighty Atlantic, sailing to the Dominican Republic in search of beans and a deeper connection with the folks who grow them. Before they begin the next chapter, The Scout spent time with Rick and Michael documenting their story.”

Cut is The Slits’ debut album and it’s fantastic. Even though it was released in September 1979, the sound completely transcends generations and sounds super fresh even today. I haven’t taken this off of my iPod/iPhone in years. It was reissued in 2009 with extra stuff. Below is a recent video interview with The Slits’ front-woman Ari Up… she’s AWESOME and seriously nuts.
——————————————–
“The Slits are a British punk rock band. The quartet was formed in 1976 by members of the bands The Flowers of Romance and The Castrators. The members were Ari Up (Arianna Forster) and Palmolive (Paloma Romero, who later left to join The Raincoats), with Viv Albertine and Tessa Pollitt replacing founding members, Kate Korus and Suzy Gutsy. Palmolive was replaced by the drummer Budgie (aka Peter Clarke), formerly of The Spitfire Boys and later to join Siouxsie and the Banshees. Although not all line-ups were exclusively female, the three main female members appeared on most record covers and publicity photos, and the group was generally presented as a female band.” – Wikipedia
