Sean emailed me a month ago and informed me of his newest mini-doc. I’ve posted about Sean’s work two other times (Man in a Van and The Archive) and have always enjoyed it. “The Bowler” is no exception; it’s a captivating, superbly directed / edited tale of a man who makes his money by bowling. Highly recommended.

How to Avoid High Fructose Corn Syrup

07.15.2010 · Posted by Roberto C. Madruga

After watching Sugar: The Bitter Truth, a lecture by Robert H. Lustig, MD, UCSF Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology, my mind was blown. I obviously knew the issues with high fructose corn syrup in a diet but I never listened to someone articulate and go into extreme detail on why HFCS is not only bad for you but can be labeled as actual poison. I also posted an article on how to avoid products that contain HFCS.

“High fructose corn syrup is commonly used in place of sugar in processed foods in the USA. In fact, the average American eats an astounding 41.5 lbs of high fructose corn syrup per year. American subsidies and tariffs have resulted in corn being a much more economical sweetener than sugar–a trend that is not seen in other parts of the world. Now that high fructose corn syrup is being added to an increasing variety of foods (breads, cereals, soft drinks, and condiments); some people are looking for ways to avoid it.”  read article in its entirety

Please, when you get a chance, watch Dr. Lustig’s lecture. You will not regret it… even though it is an hour and a half long.

Making Sriracha Chile Sauce from Scratch

07.15.2010 · Posted by Roberto C. Madruga

There’s no greater condiment than Sriracha. The Thai hot sauce has such a complexity of taste that it’s hard to beat. You can put it on anything and somehow it works. This how-to explains how to make it from scratch.

“I’m a Sriracha addict. Whether mixing it with mayo to spread onto a sandwich or slathering it onto scrambled eggs for a breakfast burrito, Sriracha is the quickest-devoured condiment (behind Hellmann’s mayo) in my fridge. I prefer Huy Fong Foods’ Chile Garlic Sauce which combines that tangy, building heat with a chunky texture and chile seeds.” read article in its entirety (Serious Eats) /// recipe

Os Gêmeos (!!!) Interview

07.14.2010 · Posted by Roberto C. Madruga

I’ve known of Os Gêmeos’ work for years now but never knew who they were. So, when I came across this interview, I was very happy to finally have some info on these Brazilian graffiti legends.
————————————-

—————————————————————————————————————
Os Gêmeos are graffiti artist identical twin brothers from São Paulo, Brazil. They started painting graffiti in 1987 and gradually became a main influence in the local scene. Their work often features yellow-skinned characters – taken from the yellow tinge both of the twins have in their dreams – but is otherwise diverse and ranges from tags to complicated murals. Subjects range from family portraits to commentary on São Paulo’s social and political circumstances, as well as Brazilian folklore. Their graffiti style was influenced by both traditional hip hop style and the Brazilian graffiti movement. ILG caught up with the twins, read what they have to say about legal wholetrains, how it all started for them, and many more.” read interview in its entirety

“Once upon a time, Bentley Bear was rambling through the woods, daydreaming about poached salmon. He stopped to take a nap in his favorite hollow tree trunk. But when he awoke, he found himself inside a huge castle glittering with diamonds, emeralds, and pearls.

Though Bentley didn’t know it at the time, he was trapped in the Crystal Castles, home of Berthilda the Witch and her evil cronies. To escape their spell, he must harvest the gems in the castles before Berthilda and her malicious gang send him into permanent hibernation.

Move Bentley around the game board collecting as many gems as you can while avoiding (jumping on or over) enemies. Work fast, because your enemies can grab gems, too. When the last gem is picked up, you’re transported to the next level. If Bentley collects it, you’re awarded a point bonus; if one of your foes gets it: no bonus for you!

Items will appear in each castle to help you out. Grabbing the witch’s hat gives you momentary invincibility, making it easier to run over your opponents and grab any remaining gems on a level. The hat has another power, as well. Should Berthilda appear on a level, as she occasionally does, you can dispatch her in one fell swoop if you’re wearing her hat. Nice! Also, keep an eye out for the pot of honey — but watch out for the bees!” play Crystal Castles online (Atari)

How the Brain Keeps Tabs on Two Tasks at Once

07.13.2010 · Posted by Roberto C. Madruga

One of my favorite things to do is multitask. Normally, when I’m at home in front of our 46 inch monitor, I have three or four things going on at once.  I’ve always been very interested in how the brain shares its resources between two or more different goals.  Here is an engaging article on how our brain delegates different tasks to different sides of the brain.
—————————————————————————————————————————-
“The human brain is considered to be pretty quick, but it lacks many of qualities of a super-efficient computer. For instance, we have trouble switching between tasks and cannot seem to actually do more than one thing at a time. So despite the increasing options—and demands—to multitask, our brains seem to have trouble keeping tabs on many activities at once.

A new study, however, illustrates how the brain can simultaneously keep track of two separate goals, even while it is busy performing a task related to one of the aims, hinting that the mind might be better at multitasking than previously thought.” read article in its entirety (Scientific American)

“Curmudgeonly comic-book writer Harvey Pekar, whose gruff, self-deprecating trials and travails were chronicled in the series “American Splendor” and the 2003 movie of the same name, died Monday. He was 70.

Cleveland Heights police Capt. Michael Cannon told the Associated Press that officers were called to Pekar’s home by his wife at about 1 a.m. Monday.
