Octopuses Carry Coconuts as Instant Shelters

06.21.2010 · Posted by Roberto C. Madruga

I once posted about an octopus “playing” with a Rubik’s cube.  I then saw a video on YouTube of an octopus camouflaging itself as seaweed.  Now, after seeing this video of an octopus using a coconut shell as a portable shelter, I’ve come to the conclusion that they may be the coolest sea creature. And they also taste delicious.

“Octopuses have been discovered tip-toeing with coconut-shell halves suctioned to their undersides, then reassembling the halves and disappearing inside for protection or deception, a new study says.” read article in its entirety (includes video)

How to Make Your Personal QR Code

A QR code is a way to distribute information and is already used vastly in Japan. By scanning the QR code to the left with a cellphone using a scanning app, it will take you to Evolve Happy. Neato!

“A QR (‘quick response’) code is a square barcode that makes getting URLs, location coordinates, any text or contact information onto a phone fast. With a barcode scanner app installed, you just point your phone’s camera at the code to read its contents.” read article in its entirety (LifeHacker)

Bluebrain | Year One

06.16.2010 · Posted by Roberto C. Madruga

This is a mini-doc about the first year of the ten-year Bluebrain Project. I don’t think blogs will be relevant in ten years, but I plan to post about this project every year of its development. The possibilities of this is overwhelming and I highly recommend that you watch this documentary.

The budding filmmaker has recently released a mini-documentary on the first year of IBM’s Bluebrain Project.” read article in its entirety (Singularity Hub)

The Colony Dark (New) is “geometric yet classic…[and] recalls the unique Italian style of engineering design, especially that of the Futurista movement of the early 1900s” and the W boasts a “unique style of late 70’s italian design.” Even though all of them are noteworthy, these two stuck out from the collection. They’re asking… no, screaming to me, “Wear me, you silly goose.”

“After re-living the excesses of the 80’s, we decided to embrace the essentialism and minimalism of objects and their functionality: a return to a classical and more elegant point of view, which had been overshadowed in these past few years, especially from the younger consumers. The SS10 RetroSuperFuture collection was conceived and designed with three basic key points in mind: simplicity, research and understated elegance.” read article in its entirety

The Evolultionary Reason for Depression

06.14.2010 · Posted by Roberto C. Madruga

————————————————————
At one point or another, all of us will deal with depression. When we dig deeper, we have to ask why it exists on an evolutionary level. Why do we put ourselves through this? This super engrossing article explains why.
————————————————————
“The mystery of depression is not that it exists — the mind, like the flesh, is prone to malfunction. Instead, the paradox of depression has long been its prevalence. While most mental illnesses are extremely rare — schizophrenia, for example, is seen in less than 1 percent of the population — depression is everywhere, as inescapable as the common cold. Every year, approximately 7 percent of us will be afflicted to some degree by the awful mental state that William Styron described as a “gray drizzle of horror . . . a storm of murk.” Obsessed with our pain, we will retreat from everything. We will stop eating, unless we start eating too much. Sex will lose its appeal; sleep will become a frustrating pursuit. We will always be tired, even though we will do less and less. We will think a lot about death.” read article in its entirety (NYT)
